Privacy, cybersecurity and public policy

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy has asked Radicand Economics for a reflection on privacy, cybersecurity and the public interest. Such a reflection, in the light of digital trends, provides insight into options for public policy. The report was delivered in 2017 and is publicly available as of April 2018 (report in Dutch; download).

Round table Access to data

On April 10, 2018, Paul de Bijl will participate in a round table meeting on access to and ownership of data, at the Ministry of Economics Affairs and Climate Policy. This topic belongs to one of the themes of the national digital strategy, which several ministries are currently preparing as a means to realize its digital ambitions.

New executive course Digital Platforms

On March 14, 2018, the new executive course Digital Platforms will kick off. Paul de Bijl (Radicand Economics) and Nicolai van Gorp (e-Conomics) developed this course for the National Academy for Finance and Economics (The Hague). The course zeroes in on digital platform business models, public policy and potential contributions of digital platforms to public goals. On the last day, the participants will work on a case.

Exploration of the future of public registration of antenna installations

At the request of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, KWINK Groep carried out an exploration of the future of the registration of antenna installations. Paul de Bijl (Radicand Economics, also associate of KWINK Groep) reflected, from an economic perspective, on the (interim) findings, in particular regarding the legitimacy of public intervention and the public interests associated with the registration of antenna installations. Big data and market supervision

De academic journal Tijdschrift voor Toezicht will publish a special issue on Big data, in the second half of 2018. Paul de Bijl (Radicand Economics) is the coordinating editor. The deadline to submit a proposal for a contribution is March 1st. The deadline to submit contributions is May 7. For more information, see the call for papers.

Digital strategy module of Executive MBA in Business & IT

On February 9, 2018, Paul de Bijl will give a lecture "The economics of digital platforms" in the module Digital Strategy and Transformation (Modular Executive MBA in Business & IT) at Nyenrode Business University. The lecture will deal with the anatomy of business models based on digital platforms, platform governance, and the impact of digital business models on competition.

Article in Telecommunications Policy

Telecommunications Policy published the empirical study "Race to the top: Does competition in the DSL market matter for fibre penetration?" by Helanya Fourie (Econex Consulting and Stellenbosch University, South Africa) and Paul de Bijl (Radicand Economics). Data from 27 European counties (from 2004 to 2015) show that a lack of or severe DSL competition is correlated with a negative effect on  fiber rollout: if a moderate degree of competition is already present, more (not too much) service-based competition may positively affect fiber rollout.

15 years of cartel leniency policy

On December 6, 2017, Paul de Bijl will participate in a panel debate on cartel leniency policy, organized by Utrecht University, Erasmus School of Law and the Vereniging voor Mededingingsrecht. The event will take place in the Academiegebouw in Utrecht. The other panel members are Gijs van Midden (lawyer BarentsKrans) and Ruben Elkerbout (partner Stek lawyers). The panel will be moderated by Professor Judith van Erp.

Panel "Taming the Big Five"

On November 2, 2017, Paul de Bijl participates in a panel "Taming the big five", on the impact and regulation of the big internet companies on society (Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook). The panel session takes place at the Nederlandse Economendag at DNB (Amsterdam). Other panel members are: professor Eric van Damme (Tilburg University), Professor José van Dijck (President KNAW and UU), Thomas Faber (Ministry of Economic Affairs). It is chaired by Focco Vijselaar (chief economist Ministry of Economic Affairs).

Conference on foreign takeovers in vital sectors

On October 12, 2017, Paul de Bijl will participate in a panel debate at a conference on ownership, control rights and the (un)desirability of foreign takeovers in vital infrastructures, at the National Academy for Finance and Economics (The Hague). Other panel members are Professor Saskia Lavrijssen (Tilburg University), Professor Bas de Jong (Radboud University) and Focco Vijselaar (chief economist Ministry of Economic Affairs).
